A weekend off in the North East: what's actually worth your time

You're not here just to work. When you get a Saturday to yourself, the North East gives you a serious amount to do — coast, castles and a properly good summer of events.

If you're on a contract or a placement up here, the easiest mistake is to treat the place as a bed and a commute. Don't. A short drive or Metro ride in any direction and you've got one of the best stretches of coast in England, real castles, and a city that knows how to put on a weekend.

Summer 2026, the dates worth knowing

The standout is the Mouth of the Tyne Festival (9–12 July) — outdoor concerts in the grounds of Tynemouth Priory, right on the headland. In the city, Exhibition Park hosts festivals across July, and the August bank holiday brings the free, family-friendly Newcastle Mela. Earlier in the summer, the Ouseburn Festival is a free, very Newcastle weekend of art and music in the city's most characterful quarter. (Always check current dates before you plan around them.)

The coast — 15 minutes east

The Tyne and Wear coast is genuinely Blue Flag standard: King Edward's Bay and Longsands at Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, and Blyth South Beach. Tynemouth on a clear day — surf school, ruined priory, fish and chips on the front, Sunday market under the old station roof — is a complete day out on its own.

Castles, if you'll drive a bit further

Head north into Northumberland and the castles start: Bamburgh standing over its beach, the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh (best reached on the coastal walk from Craster, kipper smokehouse at the end), and Warkworth above the river. Mix sandcastles with real ones — it's that kind of coast.

What this means if you're staying in the area. Our homes sit within easy reach of all of this — the coast is a short hop, the city's events are a Metro ride, and a whole house means somewhere to come back to, cook in and bring the team together rather than scatter to separate hotel rooms. A good base makes the time off as worthwhile as the work.
